Just in time for Halloween, Manuel de Falla's El amor brujo tells a tale of ghosts, enchantments, and cursed love.

Manual de Falla was heavily influenced by an old Andalusian legend when he wrote El amor brujo. With flamenco and folk musical aspects, the story follows Candelas, a young woman who bewitches her lover. The KSO performance of El amor brujo will include mezzo-soprano Amanda Cabán and projected translations of the lyrics so that you can follow along with the story!

Act I

Night in the Andalusian countryside. We find Candelas, a Roma girl, at home in front of her fire, seeking her fortune with her tarot deck. She is waiting for her lover, who does not come. The clock strikes midnight. She relates the story of a lonely fisherman who, looking for love, seeks a witch living in a cave to cure him with a potion. Candelas sets out to find the cave.

Act II

The witch's cave. It is deserted and dark until a ghostly fire (a Will-o'-the-Wisp) jumps out and dances wildly around before hiding again in a dark corner. Candelas arrives looking for the witch, but finds nobody. Suddenly The Will-o'-the-Wisp jumps out, and they dance a terrifying dance. Alone again, Candelas recites an incantation, summoning her wayward lover. And as if by magic, she sees him wandering up the mountain path towards the cave. After playing a trick on him at first, all is forgiven as distant bells herald the breaking dawn.
